General info

After the great adventure and the time superbly spent together last year, we are looking forward to a new round of brainstorming, coding, chatting and getting to know each other – while at the same time trying to find an optimal solution to a problem that might as well define many development directions and areas in years to come.

Why Python? Answering this question becomes more and more obsolete with time. Although designed and in use since more than 20 years ago, Python still seems fresh and is strongly going forward, being the programming language with the biggest growth in the last few years. Moreover, with a vast number of open-source libraries, features and design advantages, led by its ease of use, it represents a powerful tool for everybody with software engineering tasks and ideas.

On the other hand, handling energy consumption is increasingly important. We are in the midst of an era where practically all the objects we use get connected through energy-powered systems. Thus, we strongly believe that the question of managing energy efficiently is of utmost importance. The monodirectional, traditional energy network is transforming into a transactional energy network interconnecting millions of devices which communicate and coordinate their operations.

The task for the teams will be to develop the logical part of the software meant to operate several assets in a smart energy house. Optimal algorithm should be keeping energy expenses at the lowest rate possible, with respect to a number of constraints and requirements. Possibilities for reaching a working solution are endless, literally – this could be considered as an open-ended problem! We are hoping to see many different approaches and interesting ideas, but, of course, all the solutions remain the intellectual property of the participants of the Hackathon.

Where and when?

The Second Python Hackathon is going to be held during the weekend of November 17 and 18, 2018. It will be taking place at the premises of Business Incubator NS – a popular students-hub and a place well-known for its great atmosphere and fantastic events. The address is 28 Vojvođanskih brigada, Novi Sad.

On the first day, prior to the start of the competition, a short lecture will be given in order to clear-up everything regarding the task for the Hackathon. Moreover, we invite you to a Python Meet-Up on November 8, also to be held at the Business Incubator NS, where we will talk about possible approaches to solving the problem on hand, with the attention mostly on AI-powered solutions. To help us with that, Ivan Radosavljevic will jump in – an expert in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, ready to show us some concrete projects he had been working on!

What should I bring to the Hackathon?

You should only bring a computer with you, with Python installed, and have a GitHub account. Snacks, coffee and drinks will be provided by us, as well as the help during the course of the competition. We’ll try to make you feel at home – you just focus on doing the best you can.

What are the criteria?

Typhoon HIL Inc. will provide a framework for testing and grading your solutions, which is going to be available to the teams at all times, in order to verify the functionality of work done. It is also going to be used to determine the final standings after the competition, meaning that there will be no jury: our software will benchmark the correctness, quality and the computational efficiency of the solutions provided by the teams, and then display the standings in the final show-down.

However, to stimulate the teams to try to develop solutions which are as advanced as possible, maybe even something out of the ordinary, a special jury will be assembled who will decide which solution can be considered most innovative! AI solutions, optimization functions, trading algorithms… these are only some of the solutions that the jury will take into consideration. Naturally, there are many other ideas are out there, waiting to be explored and used for the challenge. During the Meet-Up, there will be a word about potential unorthodox approaches to solving the problem, including some tips and hints.

What are the prizes?

Although we hope that the competitive spirit will be what attracts the participants the most, we have some prizes at the table as well:

1. Electric standing scooter (30 km/h speed, 25 km range, with a companion phone app)
2. Sony PlayStation 4 Slim
3. Raspberry Pi 3 Model B with a case and a PSU

The award for the most innovative solution is:

1. A three-day trip to Vienna with a study visit to the Austrian Institute of Technology (late January 2019)
